“Sandi Says!” is where I’ll share what I’m learning on my journey to become your Oak Harbor City Councilmember – how our city works, what I’ll work on for you, and the issues that matter most to Oak Harbor.
When I’m out knocking on doors, I get asked what I plan to do about everything from world peace to out of control gas prices. While those are important issues that affect our daily lives, a City Councilmember’s authority is focused right here at home.
For me, the most important part of the job is to represent the people of Oak Harbor – serving as the bridge between our residents and the municipal government. That means actively listening to community concerns and advocating for the needs of our neighbors.
Local laws and Ordinances: Councilmembers, with input from citizen-led commissions, are responsible for crafting and enacting local laws and ordinances. These cover everything from zoning regulations to public safety measures, all with the goal of enhancing our quality of life here in Oak Harbor.
Budget: Councilmembers also oversee the city’s budget. We work closely with city staff to make sure your tax dollars are used wisely, funding things like road maintenance, public parks, and emergency services.
Strategic Planning: We have to think long-term. Whether it’s planning infrastructure improvements, making the Growth Management Act work better for our city, or balancing community requests like finding a place for pickleball and basketball courts, every decision should help build a stronger, more vibrant future for our city.
Preparation: Before every council meeting, the council receives a “packet”, often hundreds of pages of reports and background materials. We must review documents and reports, research additional information, get feedback from the community, and, when needed, ask staff for clarification so we can make informed decisions that serve our residents well.
Advocacy: Being your voice doesn’t stop at City Hall. Here at home, in Olympia and, the other Washington – D.C. – I’ll be advocating for Oak Harbor, sharing your concerns with our county, state, and federal representatives, to get our city the attention and resources it deserves.
Community Involvement: While much of the Council’s work is serious and focused on city business, one of the best parts of the job is being out in the community. From recognizing new businesses and honoring local milestones to cheering on our Little League teams and celebrating graduations, these moments remind us who we serve and why the work matters. It’s a joy to be part of Oak Harbor’s celebrations and to see firsthand the heart and pride that make this city so special.
I’ll always use my relationships with friends in Olympia and Washington, D.C. to share your concerns, but my vote is only cast on the things happening here in Oak Harbor.
